Over a dozen people, including Jignesh Padia and his wife Liza Parekh, thought they were getting a bivalent COVID booster shot at a Regina pharmacy, but instead got expired, monovalent vaccines. (Jignesh Padia)

A Regina man is angry after learning he, his wife and about a dozen others were recently injected with expired COVID-19 vaccines.

“We were trying to do the right thing. We’re protecting my family and others by getting this vaccination. And to hear that you got something expired, it was unbelievable,” Jignesh Padia told CBC News.

On Nov. 19, Padia and his wife went to the Southland Mall Safeway pharmacy to get a bivalent COVID shot, while their son got a flu shot.

He recalled that he sensed something was off.

“We did notice that the pharmacist appeared a little bit tired,” Padia said.

He said that’s why he double checked with the pharmacist that he and his wife were getting bivalent shots and made his son get the flu shot first “to avoid any mismanagement.”

Then this past Friday, Padia got a call from the pharmacy informing him that the shots he and his wife received had expired on Nov. 2.

He was also told that they got doses that only protect against the original coronavirus, and not the bivalent vaccine that protects against Omicron subvariants.

“My son even said, ‘how can this happen? When there is expired food, they throw it out,'” Padia said.

Regina pharmacy investigating why people were given expired COVID-19 vaccines

More than a dozen people were given expired COVID-19 vaccines from one Regina pharmacy, so what does that mean for them?

Padia and his wife weren’t the only ones who got expired COVID vaccines. Sobeys, which owns Safeway pharmacies, says it has notified 15 people that they were given expired doses.

The company also said all the doses were the monovalent COVID-19 booster, not the bivalent one.

Sobeys says it has apologized to patients affected by the incident. (Andrew Vaughan/The Canadian Press)

Pharmacies are supposed to throw out expired vaccines, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.

Sobeys apologizes

Sobeys said it’s conducting an internal investigation to learn what led to the incident and how it can be prevented in the future.

“We sincerely regret that this has taken place and have apologized to our patients for the situation and inconvenience. This is contrary to the clearly outlined vaccine administration, storage and safety procedures we have in place at our pharmacies,” wrote Sarah Dawson, public affairs lead for Sobeys.

Padia has also asked Saskatchewan’s pharmacy regulatory body to investigate.

The Saskatchewan College of Pharmacy Professionals says it’s mandated to investigate every complaint that it receives from the public about pharmacists, but is not able to publicly comment on an open complaint or investigation.

Expired vaccines are not harmful but may lose their effectiveness depending on how long after expiry they have been administered, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health. (Nathan Denette/The Canadian Press)

Expired vaccines may lose effectiveness

Sobeys said it’s working with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and the vaccine manufacturer to figure out if the expired vaccines are still viable.

Expired vaccines are not harmful, but may lose their effectiveness and may not produce the same immune response depending on how long they’ve been expired for, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.

“If they are considered viable then they will produce the same immune response as a non-expired vaccine. If determined to not be viable, the vaccine may need to be re-administered to be sure they develop an appropriate immune response,” the ministry wrote in a statement.

There are currently about 1,600 doses of expired vaccine in pharmacies and SHA clinics across the province, according to the ministry, which says vaccine manufacturers continuously test samples of vaccines on the market and, depending on the results of those tests, may extend expiry dates.

Padia hopes to know whether he and his family are protected against COVID soon.

“I’m just puzzled,” he said.

Terrell Owens knocked out a heckler outside of a CVS store in California after the man reportedly harassed a fan of his in the store, a new viral video shows.

A witness captured the fight, which went down Saturday night around 11:30 p.m. at the pharmacy in Inglewood, TMZ Sports reports.

The Hall of Fame wide receiver, 48, was approached by a San Francisco 49ers fan and the two struck up a conversation, with Owens having spent seven seasons playing in the Bay Area before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004.

Terrell Owens Comes To Defense Of 49ers Fan After Heckler Begins Threatening Them

Moments later, a man began harassing the 49ers fan, while the former NFL great tried to keep the peace between them, according to the outlet.

But the aggressor soon began threatening to beat up Owens and the fan.

While outside the store on the sidewalk, the heckler could be seen throwing the first punch, which Owens easily blocks before knocking the aggressor to the ground.

No police were called to the scene, and the six-time Pro Bowler reportedly left the scene in his car without further incident.

Earlier this year, Owens was the target of another viral instance after a “Karen” was filmed harassing Owens, The Shade Room previously reported.

Incident Is Second This Year For Owens, Who Was Falsely Accused Of Trying To Attack A “Karen”

In a video posted to social media in August, Terrell Owens shared a recent encounter with a “Karen” in his neighborhood who falsely accused him of trying to attack her as he went to the mailbox.

Going live on Instagram, Terrell Owens shocked fans when he shared an experience he was dealing with in his neighborhood in real-time—which involved a “Karen” not minding her business and painting a false narrative involving a Black man.

According to Terrell, a verbal altercation ensued between himself and the unidentified white woman because she apparently didn’t approve of his driving as he went to his mailbox. The woman, who was on a bicycle, accused him of trying to hit her with his car, a claim he firmly denied ever happened.

She went even further with her accusations and told a police officer that Terrell Owens got out of his vehicle and approached her in an aggressive manner. To which he responded:

“You don’t yell at me and tell me I almost hit you and I didn’t.” The woman then replied, “But, you didn’t have to get out of your f**king car!” However, things got even worse when the woman actually screamed at Terrell and shouted, “You’re a Black man approaching a white woman!”

Owens previously played in the National Football League for 15 seasons. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018, in his third year of eligibility.

    OTTAWA –

Federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says the previously announced one million units of imported kids’ pain relievers are starting to arrive on pharmacy shelves, while an additional 500,000 units have been ordered and are expected over the next few weeks.

A separate shipment of kids’ pain relievers from Australia are headed for hospitals and domestic production has ramped up, Duclos said at a news conference Friday morning.

Parents across Canada have been scrambling to manage their children’s fever and pain as rates of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza skyrocket amid a dire shortage of pediatric acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Last week, Health Canada said the one million imported units will be almost identical to the medications that are authorized in this country, typically known by the brand names Tylenol and Advil.

“In some places, the shelves already show those units received. In other places it might take an additional day or so,” Duclos said.

“We expect that in the next week the availability of those doses will be quite clear in shelves across community pharmacies across the country.”

The Canadian Pharmacists Association confirmed to The Canadian Press shipments have started to arrive, and it expects products will be seen on store shelves over the next few days and into next week.

“We’re hopeful that this will start to bring some relief to parents and caregivers and help address our immediate needs,” said Danielle Paes, the association’s chief pharmacist officer, in a statement.

The emergency imports of medication spread across Canada are not enough to fix the shortage, pharmacists noted, so it’s important to avoid stockpiling.

“Most of the pharmacies are doing purchase limits, one quantity per person, keeping it behind the counter, telling people to buy only what they need,” said Shelita Dattani, vice-president of pharmacy affairs for the Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada.

Duclos said that in addition to the emergency imports, domestic production is increasing to meet demand, noting more than 1.1 million units of children’s Advil products have been made by producer Haleon in November alone for the Canadian market.

Those units are going to hospitals first, then community pharmacies later, Dattani said.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said that COVID-19, RSV and influenza are continuing to co-circulate at high levels.

While RSV activity seems to have levelled off, Tam said she expects it to remain elevated for weeks to come.

There’s a “steep rise” in influenza activity, affecting an unusually high number of children and teenagers, she said.

Pediatric hospitals across Canada are reporting a “sharp increase” in flu-related hospitalizations among kids 16 years of age and younger, Tam noted.

There is no vaccine for RSV, but Tam urged Canadians to get the flu shot and keep up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccination, as well as take other infection control precautions such as staying home when sick, wearing masks and washing hands.

Jean Coutu and Brunet pharmacies saw their services blacked out Thursday afternoon by what company officials were describing as “an equipment failure” involving telecommunications services.

By late afternoon, owner Metro said “the situation is stabilizing” throughout the network. Outlets in Metro food stores were not affected, the company said.

“Pharmacy teams are working very hard to serve patients as soon as possible, but have to deal with the backlog the situation has caused,” said pharmacy division head of communications Catherine Latendresse.

A pharmacist at a Jean Coutu outlet in Montreal said the store where she is employed had shut its doors because laboratory software, cash registers and the company phone system were not working.

On Twitter some customers said the crash was preventing outlets from preparing prescription orders.

The outage was related to the services of telecommunications company Videotron, which said a “service interruption” was reported in the Varennes area where Groupe Jean Coutu’s offices and distribution centre are located.

“Our teams identified the source of the problem and all services have returned to normal,” Videotron said.

Overlapping prescriptions of gabapentin and opioids grew over a 12-year period, pharmacy claims data showed.

Concurrent prescriptions increased from 1.9% in 2006 to 7.6% in 2018, a relative increase of 344%, reported Evan Peet, PhD, of the RAND Corporation in Washington, D.C., and co-authors, in a research letter published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

“As the opioid crisis continues throughout the country, clinicians are facing increasing restrictions on prescribing opioids,” Peet told MedPage Today.

“This study examines one way in which prescribers may be responding to these restrictions: prescribing gabapentin off-label concurrently with opioids,” Peet said.

“This approach to pain management has uncertain effectiveness and is potentially dangerous due to an association with all-cause and drug-related hospitalizations,” he pointed out.

Gabapentin is approved for seizures and post-herpetic neuralgia; gabapentin enacarbil is approved for restless legs syndrome. Despite limited indications, gabapentin and pregabalin (another gabapentinoid) are widely prescribed off-label for various other pain syndromes. Evidence is sparse for most off-label uses.

Common side effects of gabapentinoids include drowsiness, dizziness, blurry or double vision, and difficulty with coordination and concentration.

In 2019, the FDA warned about serious breathing problems that may occur in patients using gabapentin or pregabalin who have respiratory risk factors. These factors include taking opioids or other drugs that depress the central nervous system, having conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that reduce lung function, and being older in age.

In their analysis, Peet and colleagues evaluated pharmacy claims data from 2006 to 2018 in IQVIA real-world longitudinal prescription records, which captured about 90% of prescriptions filled at retail pharmacies nationally.

The researchers defined opioid analgesic and gabapentin episodes by the first prescription fill date through the last day of the prescription’s supply. Subsequent prescriptions within 60 days of the prior one extended an episode by the amount of overlap, while prescriptions filled more than 60 days after the last prescription began a new episode.

In 2006, there were 37.4 million opioid episodes, which climbed to a high of 56.0 million before falling to 42.1 million in 2018. There were 1.5 million gabapentin episodes in 2006, which rose continually to 8.1 million in 2018.

Between 2006 and 2018, 18.1% of all overlap periods consisted of opioids and gabapentin episodes that began in the same week. By 2018, most overlap periods involved starting gabapentin before opioids.

Concurrent prescriptions were most commonly written by pain specialists (19.2% vs 4.2% for other specialties). “Differences between specialties may be exacerbated by cases in which gabapentin may have modest impact (e.g., chronic and/or neuropathic pain), by the complexity of cases overall, or because opioid prescribing restrictions more severely affect pain management strategies for complex cases,” Peet and colleagues observed.

Overlaps in prescribing occurred more among female patients, patients 66 and older, and patients who lived in rural, high-poverty, and predominantly white counties.

The findings suggested that increases in concurrent prescriptions might be an unintended consequence of opioid prescribing restrictions, the researchers noted.

The analysis looked at dispensed — not written — prescriptions, Peet and co-authors acknowledged. Data were limited to retail pharmacies only. In addition, the researchers did not have information about patients’ clinical status.

Using an online pharmacy to buy meds? it's buyer beware, FDA says

It might be tempting to buy prescription medication online, but buyers should beware, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.

While some websites operate legally and can offer convenience, privacy and lower costs, others may be selling unapproved, counterfeit and unsafe medications, the FDA advises.

Many unsafe online pharmacies do exist, offering without requiring a prescription and selling them at “deeply discounted” prices.

These pharmacies may use fake “store fronts” designed to mimic licensed pharmacies. They may imply or say that their medicines come from countries with high safety standards, according to the FDA.

Yet, what they’re selling could be made anywhere without safety or effectiveness. The drugs could also be fake or expired.

Be wary if the online pharmacy does not require a doctor’s prescription, the FDA cautioned. Other red flags: The pharmacy is not licensed in the United States or by your state board of pharmacy and doesn’t have a licensed pharmacist on staff to answer questions.

You should also beware medicine that looks different from what you receive at your usual pharmacy, arrives in damaged packaging, is labeled in a , has no expiration date or is expired.

A price that seems too good to be true is another warning sign.

An unsafe online pharmacy may not provide clear written protections about guarding your personal and , may charge you for products you never ordered or received, or may sell your information to others.

The medications from these pharmacies may have too much or too little of the active ingredient that treats your condition. They may contain a different or a harmful substance.

These medications may fail to help you but may also have an unexpected interaction with other medicines you take, cause an allergic reaction or have a dangerous side effect. They may not have been stored properly, which could make them ineffective.

Despite all of these problems, it is still possible to find a safe online pharmacy.

The FDA suggests looking for one that always requires a doctor’s prescription, provides a physical address and telephone number in the United States and has a licensed pharmacist on staff to answer your questions.

This online pharmacy should be licensed with a state board of pharmacy. You can check the pharmacy’s license in the state’s board of pharmacy license database by using the location tool on the FDA’s BeSafeRx website. Don’t use a pharmacy that isn’t listed.

Model, mother, bestselling author, and face of Kérastase, Emily Ratajkowski (better known to the world as EmRata), can now add podcaster to her impressive CV. Here, the High Low host speaks to Vogue about her French pharmacy favorites, tapping into her instinct, and why she’s obsessed with TikTok.

On how she wakes up in the morning

Well, I have a son—he wakes me up! The first thing I do is change his diaper and get him fed, and then I have coffee and stare at him while he eats. Once that’s done, I take care of my skin. I have gotten a lot better at being good with my skin. In my early twenties, I was just like, “I’m not dealing with this”, but now I put on sunscreen, use toner, and moisturizer. I have a whole routine. Then I get dressed—hopefully quickly, because my closet is relatively organized, and then I’m out the door.

On her secret to amazing hair

I have relatively new bangs. I always say—even off the record—that Kérastase really did change my hair. When I signed [to be an ambassador] with them about five years ago, I didn’t know about good hair products and while I’m actually pretty decent at make-up, I’m not great at hair. I always just thought I had bad hair and that’s what it was. What’s great is that now I don’t have to do much to my hair because it’s all in the care and maintenance. I love the Extentioniste line because it makes my hair grow really fast! I’m somebody whose hair gets to a certain point and then breaks, but with that shampoo, it gets to a longer point. I also really love the oil—it’s lightweight and smells amazing.

On her new podcast “High Low”

There are two episodes a week, sometimes three. The first episode is a conversation with a guest, hosted by me. And then the second one is a solo episode, called “EmRata asks”, where I’ll pose a question and then investigate it. The third episode is a subscription episode, where listeners can give feedback and send their thoughts, voice notes and DMs and we open up the conversation. I’ve been working like crazy on it—I’m really excited.

    On her skincare routine

I wash my face every night—well, I try to. I use Bioderma—it’s a French drugstore product that’s an amazing makeup remover. It’s the only one that just gets it done and doesn’t feel like it leaves something on your skin, or dries it out. When I’ve washed my face, then I use Biologique Recherche P50—some people don’t love it, but I am somebody for whom retinol is too extreme, so P50 is a happy medium. It balances my skin and I layer it with a pretty thick moisturizer.

Bioderma Sensibio Cleansing Micellar Water Sensitive Skin

    On her pharmacy favorites

As well as Bioderma, I love Biafine—it’s a moisturizer. It’s so good. One time I really burned—I had crazy, crazy sunburn—and that was the only thing that healed it. I also love Aquaphor, another amazing product. I also feel like drugstore makeup gets a bad rap, but I think it’s really good. I have some amazing highlighters and bits that are so great. Plus my friend works in make-up development and she’s like, “I’m telling you, they all come from the same factories—it’s just the packaging!”

On rituals that help her to relax and switch off

I watch an hour of TikTok—that’s how I switch off! There is nothing else that feels more entertaining or relaxing for me. My algorithm goes crazy for one sound so right now I’m all about the “Sbagliato”. I also love when people do story times, where they say “one thing about me” and go into a story. I will watch three minutes of those, and then go for part two. TikTok doesn’t feel like social media. It’s like Netflix or Hulu, not like Instagram, and I have learned a lot. It’s funny and makes me feel good about human beings.

On her feelings about social media generally

It’s both somewhere I feel like I have control and a way to connect to people directly, and also a totally toxic time-suck which makes me feel that I’m not present in ways that I really want to be. It’s both. I have a complicated relationship with it. I have the timer set on Instagram for an hour and I generally do go over. I wish I had more advice on it!

On the experience of writing her book My Body

I mean, I didn’t know that I was writing a book about my body until it was basically written, and I was looking for a title. I realized that what I was writing about was the commodification of my body and image, and even the violation of my body, not in the industry, but as a young girl. It definitely changed my relationship with it. My editor advised that the last essay in the book should be a hopeful, where-are-you-now kind of moment, but I didn’t feel that way. I was having a hard time.

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) said it has sealed 381 pharmacies and patent shops in Akwa Ibom State for various offences.

The Director and Head of Enforcement Department of PCN, Stephen Esumobi, disclosed this while addressing reporters in Uyo on Friday.

Mr Esumobi said the sealing of the pharmacies and patent shops followed an enforcement exercise by the council to ensure that they comply with the operational laws, rules of the council.

He said that out of the 381 premises sealed, 52 were pharmacies while 329 were patent medicine shops.

“These premises were sealed for offences which include, operating without registration or renewal of premises certificates, unauthorised sale of medicines, abuse, and poor access control to the poison cupboard.

“Others are poor storage facilities and temperature control, stocking and sale of prescription and other ethical products by the patent medicine vendors, among others,” he said.

He said at the end of the exercise, 727 premises were visited, comprising 559 patent medicine shops and 168 pharmacies.

Mr Esumobi said during the enforcement, the council visited Uyo and Ikono, Abak, Itu, Eket, Ibesikpo Asutan, Ikot Ekpene and Oron local government areas.

“Pharmacies must have a full-time Superintendent Pharmacist, who shall supervise all pharmaceutical activities within the premises.

“Personnel in charge of pharmaceutical premises must also have knowledge that is appropriate for the scope of pharmaceutical activity.

“All registered premises are expected to display their current premises certificates or evidence of registration conspicuously within the premises to enable members of the public to know the status of premises where they buy their medicine,” he said.
